Planting a Seed: KITS Production Studio for a Cause

Since 2009, Kids In The Spotlight [KITS] has empowered foster youth to heal and grow from trauma through the art of filmmaking, where KITS has amassed a library of over 75 short films written by, cast by, and starring these underserved youth.

Now, KITS is launching a Production Studio for a Cause [PSFAC] to disrupt the school to prison and homelessness pipeline among foster care youth by increasing career readiness, social capital, and personal wellness. It's a place where industry professionals get to pay it forward, and foster youth are valued, educated, and employed.

Our goal of $50,000 will be used as seed money towards purchasing a building for the PSFAC. For major gifts and corporate engagement, please contact Nita Schimmel at nita@kitsinc.org or 818-945-2009.

WHAT?
Operating as a social enterprise, KITS will use the entertainment industry's tools and labor income to provide racial and economic justice to LA's most underserved youth through workplace training in – and the artistic outlet of – filmmaking & digital media.

WHY?
LA's foster youth make up almost 10% of the national number of youth in foster care. We have a tremendous opportunity to bridge the gap of what the entertainment industry generates for the economy [$158.3 billion for LA County] and the societal costs of foster care [$1 million per aged out youth, per year] if we re-focus the labor income and job opportunities to the most at-risk population.

HOW?
The studio will operate seven days a week as an innovative learning, vocational & social enterprise. It will provide foster youth with a safe and creative space to heal, create content, and learn the entertainment industry's intricate details while being gainfully employed. Industry professionals will pay it forward through renting one or more of our many sets to create their films, TV shows, and other digital and media content with the caveat of hiring our youth – identified as Young Professionals – to work on their projects.

As the PSFAC provides real opportunities to empower foster youth to be self-sufficient, it will be creating racial & economic justice for these often overlooked and most vulnerable youth. We invite you to become a part of something huge with a lasting impact, both for the creative economy and foster youth here in Los Angeles!

WHEN?
Our goal is to purchase a building by March 2022. Watch the below video to take a sneak peek of our 3D walk-through model.
